nutcracker performance
New This Year —
Highlights from The Sleeping Beauty!

This charming fairy tale demonstrates the height of classical ballet, one of the greatest, purest works in the art form. OBT’s performance will include excerpts from Act III, where fairy-tale characters such as Princess Florine & Blue Bird, Little Red Riding Hood & the Wolf, The White Cat & Puss-in-Boots dance in celebration of the union of Princess Aurora & Prince Désiré!

Griffes with Seattle Chamber Players

In addition to the production of the Highlights from The Sleeping Beauty, OBT will present a brand new piece to a score by Charles Griffes, in a collaborative project with locally and internationally known Seattle Chamber Players.

The Kairn of Koridwen, a dance-drama by American composer Charles Griffes (1884- 1920), was adapted from Les Grandes Legendes de France, and is a tale of forbidden love between the druidess Carmelis and Mordred, a Gallic warrior in search of adventure.

This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

STORY OF THE BALLET

With an enchanting score by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and choreography by most influential ballet master Marius Petipa, the ballet made its debut in 1890 at St. Petersburg’s Imperial Mariinsky Theatre. The Sleeping Beauty, more than any other of the great classical ballet works, inspired and transformed those that were fortunate enough to see it. As a matter of fact, Anna Pavlova, the ubiquitous Russian ballerina, chose to pursue dance as a career after attending a performance of The Sleeping Beauty at the age of eight. George Balanchine, the founder of New York City Ballet and considered the 20th century’s definitive choreographer, made his stage debut at the age of ten as a cupid in a Mariinsky production of Sleeping Beauty. Margot Fonteyn, as Princess Aurora, became an international superstar, and was subsequently able to introduce the art form to many who may have never ventured to a ballet performance.
